Internship and Job Opportunities for Bagunçaço Youths (IJOBY)

Marie Aichagui about her new project IJOBY

After having lead a mining strategy project in Brazil in 2007, it was the kindness of the people that made me want to go back and get to know them better. Since the Brazilian people had shared with me their way of life, I wanted to give them something in return. I reckoned that if I combine my industrial experience and network from the global corporate world with my wish to integrate favela life, I could add value by helping these two worlds to approach each other.

Brazil is home of the world’s largest rain forest with its stunning nature and tremendous potential. That gives the whole international community an interest in preserving this resource, which is only possible if social welfare is generalized among its citizens.

But the reality is that criminality is one of Brazil’s most urgent problems. In order to keep children and youths away from criminality, enabling them to integrate stable companies would be their first step towards a better future. However, the diverging life styles and norms of the favela (less fortunate areas) inhabitants on the one hand and the recruiters on the other hand, are so different that their meeting often is a social cultural shock, harming the first impression. Our ambition is to understand the needs and expectations of both sides, work on minimizing the discrepancies as well as focusing on how the two sides can benefit from each other’s assets and competences. The purpose of these efforts is bringing Bagunçaço’s youths and companies together for a long-term collaboration.
